Chapter 8

Harvesting Wild Vegetables

Soon, the three of them saw Aunt w.a.n.g, who was also carrying a basket on her back.

Aunt w.a.n.g was a little surprised when she saw the two siblings.

“h.e.l.lo, Aunt w.a.n.g. We’ll go with you!” Lin Xiaoyue quickly greeted Aunt w.a.n.g. At the same time, she pulled on Lin Xiaozhi’s hand.

“h.e.l.lo, Aunt w.a.n.g!” The little boy quickly greeted her.

“Good kids!” Aunt w.a.n.g said with a smile.

“I’m sorry. These two children insist on following us. I don’t feel at ease even if I let them stay at home…” Liu s.h.i.+ said embarra.s.sedly.

Aunt w.a.n.g had a look of understanding.

“It’s okay. The more the merrier!”

Didn’t that old woman from the Lin family cause a ruckus yesterday? Xiaoyue got injured, so it was normal for her mother to be worried.

Hence, the group of people went up the mountain merrily.

Lin Xiaoyue held Lin Xiaozhi’s hand and followed behind the two of them. They actually met quite a number of villagers on the mountain.

Aunt w.a.n.g explaining to those people that she wasn’t dumb anymore and that she had communicated with the King of h.e.l.l.

Lin Xiaoyue was very polite. She greeted everyone she met.

Lin Xiaozhi mimicked his sister and greeted them as well. The villagers were pleased.

Some people even said that the Lin family was really blind to chase away such a hardworking daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

Lin Xiaoyue finally knew that the Lin family’s reputation in the village was actually not very good.

Aunt w.a.n.g and her mother brought Lin Xiaoyue and Lin Xiaozhi all the way up the mountain. They only stopped when they were halfway there.

“I saw the Zheng family just now. All the families in the village are having a hard time.” After picking a spot, Aunt w.a.n.g put down the basket on her back and began to work.

In this day and age, who would be willing to go into the mountains to dig wild vegetables if they weren’t desperate.

They had just gone up the mountain and saw that there were more people in the mountain today. Not all of them were here to forage for food.

“Isn’t that right? It’s only summer, and it’s still long till the autumn harvest. There was a plague last year, and every household doesn’t have much grain left,” Liu s.h.i.+ replied.

If not for this, her husband wouldn’t have had to go out and work for others. He had fallen from a height and died while building a house.

Thinking of this, Liu s.h.i.+’s eyes turned sour, and she wanted to cry.

Aunt w.a.n.g noticed it and she knew that she was thinking of her husband, so she quickly changed the topic.

“The Zhuang family has rich connections, so they won’t starve to death. Your daughter is better now and she can work in the future. You will be able to survive this.”

When Liu s.h.i.+ heard this, she turned around and looked at her daughter. Seeing that she was harvesting wild vegetables not far away, a hint of relief flashed in her eyes.

Aunt w.a.n.g was right. Now that her daughter was awake, she didn’t have to worry about her anymore in the future.

“Yes, you’re right,” Liu s.h.i.+ replied and continued to work.

While she was busy, she also talked to Aunt w.a.n.g about her eldest son, w.a.n.g Shuanzi, and her daughter, w.a.n.g Erya.

w.a.n.g Shuanzi was already at the age of marriage, but his family conditions were not good. In order to save some money, Uncle w.a.n.g was going to take him to the pier to work.

As for w.a.n.g Erya, Aunt w.a.n.g said that she wanted to ask her to teach her how to sew, saying that her needlework was the best in this village.

Liu s.h.i.+ agreed and told her to get her daughter to come over this afternoon.

Lin Xiaoyue worked while listening to the conversation between the two.

But she was fast and soon moved to a farther place.
